Monarch Air Group continues to provide relief and supply missions to Puerto Rico

December 10, 2017:

Puerto Rico native and Carnegie Mellon University graduate Rosana Guernica, is continuing her humanitarian mission to help the residents of Puerto Rico with water, food, medicine and medical attention after almost 11 weeks have passed since Hurricane Maria struck. Today, the fifth relief flight that has been chartered with the money she has raised departed from Miami International Airport towards Aguadilla on the west side of the island.

The aircraft transported 28,000 lbs in relief supplies and 150 Puerto Rican residents who received medical attention in south Florida during the past days. Rosana Guernica thinks there's still plenty more to do; “Little progress has been made in the island during the past months. The aftermath is unapparelled, with half of the residents still without electricity and an ongoing medical crisis. Our mission is far from ending,” states Guernica.

The MD-83 chartered aircraft is the largest of the five relief flights rented by Rosana Guernica. One of the first trips was an eight passenger Learjet 45 carrying 1,200 lbs of medical supplies, alongside volunteers and a physician, and bringing back six people and one dog. Weeks after, a regional jet was loaded with approximately 2,000 lbs of supplies and seven people, including Rosana, a doctor and others to help with logistics on the ground. 22 people were flown back to Florida alongside a support dog.

Additionally, in a flight that took place on October 28th, 16,000 lbs of relief supplies were sent to Puerto Rico and 60 passengers in need of proper and immediate medical attention were brought back to Florida. All five flights have been loaded with water, medicine, medical supplies, rice, beans, baby food and diapers, with others, providing relief to mountain and coastal regions that have been difficult to access.

Back in September, her humanitarian mission started just days after the hurricane hit Puerto Rico. “I heard that people were getting out the island by private jets, and I thought we could do the same for people in need. That's when I contacted Monarch Air Group in Fort Lauderdale, and since then we have delivered real hope for hundreds of residents.”
