Altea checklist helps owners weigh FBO safety and cost

August 3, 2026

The checklist highlights operational and security risks, from ground handling incidents to perimeter breaches, that owners may not spot without specialist knowledge.

Rising fuel prices and special event fees have increased pressure for clearer FBO pricing structures.

Business aircraft owners have a tool for choosing an FBO, with Altea publishing a checklist covering pricing transparency, security and ground handling risk.

Rising operating costs, higher fuel prices and special-event fees have intensified the need for pricing transparency, while staffing pressures, growing fleet volumes and increased aircraft size continue to challenge service standards across the sector. Ground operations and aircraft handling remain critical factors in FBO selection, with inefficiencies capable of causing delays, missed slots and increased risk of aircraft damage. Recent incidents, including hangar fires, accidental fire foam discharge and ground movement collisions, illustrate how operational shortcomings can escalate quickly.

Security is a further consideration. Aircraft vandalism at London Stansted Airport, where perimeter security was breached, demonstrated the risk when appropriate measures are not in place, leaving aircraft owners exposed whether their aircraft is kept inside a hangar or outside on the apron.

Robin Dunlop at Altea says: “A quick sweep on the internet can be revealing, but this should be followed up by personal contact and recommendations where possible. Our checklist is designed to help owners look beyond surface-level and make wise decisions based on operational quality, transparency and long-term value.”

Dunlop adds: “Small operational details often point to much larger risks. Our role is to help owners identify those early, ensuring the right FBO supports both safety and operational efficiency.”

Experiences vary significantly between markets. US FBOs tend to prioritise efficiency, while those in the Middle East accommodate longer pre-flight dwell times, and larger chains offer consistency where smaller regional operators rely on local relationships and on-the-ground expertise. Altea's advisory services aim to give owners the clarity to navigate these factors, reduce risk and make informed decisions, with the team frequently accompanying owners as they inspect facilities.
