The aircraft has entered a wider test programme as Textron works towards certification and planned service entry in 2027.
Textron Aviation has advanced development of its next-generation light jet portfolio after the Cessna Citation M2 Gen3 prototype completed its maiden flight, clearing the way for an expanded flight-test campaign ahead of certification and entry into service in 2027.
The 2.7-hour flight focused on aircraft handling qualities and system evaluations, with the aircraft reaching 41,000ft and 263kt. Piloted by Andrew Thorson and Tanner Towns, the sortie completed all planned validation checks.
“The aircraft systems and software performed as intended throughout the flight, with all validation checks completed successfully, contributing to a smooth and uneventful flight,” says Tanner Towns, Flight Test Engineer at Textron. “This flight confirms the strong foundation we've built as we move into the next phase of testing.”
The prototype will now support a wider programme of flight testing as Textron works towards Federal Aviation Administration certification.

The M2 Gen3 introduces Garmin Emergency Autoland to the Citation M2 platform, alongside the Garmin G3000 flight deck and autothrottle technology. Textron Aviation says the combination is intended to simplify operation while enhancing confidence for pilots and passengers.
Cabin upgrades include ambient lighting, illuminated cupholders, wireless charging, USB-A and USB-C connectivity and an optional folding side-facing seat that can also be used for additional cargo capacity.
The aircraft is expected to offer a maximum range of 1,550nm, seating for up to eight occupants, a maximum payload of 1,510lb and baggage capacity of up to 725lb.
